AP (Advanced Placement) is a College Board program that lets high-school students take university-level courses. It spans more than 30 subjects, from calculus and physics to economics and English literature, and each course ends with a standardised AP exam held every May. At Studrise we offer one-on-one online tutoring in 19 of these subjects.
AP scores are one of the strongest signals of academic readiness in university applications, especially in the United States and Canada, and many universities across Europe and the UK accept them too. Strong AP scores make your application stand out, earn course credit or exemptions at many universities and — with the right subject choices — build an academic profile that matches the program you are aiming for.

Every AP subject has its own exam, but they share a common structure:
40–75 questions depending on the subject · 40–70% of the exam score
FRQs, essays, DBQs or a project · 30–60% of the exam score
Most exams run 2 to 3 hours 15 minutes · most subjects digital in Bluebook since 2025
First two weeks of May every year · one sitting per subject
All AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale: 5 means "extremely well qualified", 4 "very well qualified" and 3 "qualified", with 3 generally treated as a passing score. Raw scores from the multiple-choice and free-response sections are combined using weightings set separately for each subject and then converted to the scale, so the share of correct answers needed for a given score varies from subject to subject. Selective universities — and competitive programs such as engineering, pre-med and economics in particular — usually expect a 4 or 5. Credit and exemption policies differ by institution; checking your target universities' AP policy early also sharpens your subject choices.
AP courses suit students in grades 10, 11 and 12 who plan to study at university abroad. Which subjects to take comes down to two criteria: the fields your target program expects and the topics you are strongest in. Because the exams are held once a year in May, preparation usually spans the school year; students sitting several AP exams need a balanced study plan across subjects in the final 3–4 months before May. In the free level assessment we work out together which AP subjects are right for you and how much time each one needs.
