Study in the UK: your university application, step by step

Most universities don't treat the Turkish lise diploma alone as equivalent to A-Levels and ask for an International Foundation Year. That said, a growing number accept a high-GPA diploma (usually 80–90%+) directly, sometimes together with a YKS result or a completed year at a Turkish university; IB, A-Levels or strong AP + SAT results also give direct entry. We verify which route each target university accepts when the list is built.

UCAS is the central system for all undergraduate applications in the UK; one file carries up to 5 programme choices (4 for medicine, dentistry and veterinary). The deadline is 15 October for Oxford, Cambridge and those three fields, and the mid-to-late January equal-consideration date for everything else; the exact days are announced by UCAS each year. Applications are accepted after that, but universities close as places fill; Clearing starts from late June.

A foundation is a one-year bridging programme between high school and a degree: subject-specific modules, academic English and study skills; finishing with the required grade guarantees progression to the partner university's bachelor's. It's the safest route if the target university doesn't accept the lise diploma directly or there is no IB / A-Level / AP. As it adds a year and £15,000–25,000, the decision is made together in the first call, based on the target universities' conditions and the student's profile.

Yes. From 2026 entry the single essay is replaced by three structured questions: why you want this course, how you've prepared for it (subjects, reading, projects) and what experiences outside school have prepared you. The overall limit stays at 4,000 characters and the same text goes to all 5 choices, so it should be subject-focused but university-neutral. Drafts are reviewed together in several rounds during consultancy.

UCAT for medicine and dentistry (one sitting in July–September, before applying), LNAT for law at participating universities, TMUA / ESAT for maths, engineering, economics and sciences at Cambridge and Imperial (October), STEP as well for Cambridge maths; Oxford runs its own subject tests such as MAT, PAT and TSA. Registration closes weeks before the test dates and changes every year, so this calendar is set at the end of grade 11. Oxbridge and medicine applicants also face interviews in December.

The Graduate visa lets those who complete a bachelor's or master's in the UK look for and take work without employer sponsorship; it currently lasts 2 years, and the 2025 white paper set out a cut to 18 months, so confirm the rule for your application year on gov.uk. After that the usual long-term route is the employer-sponsored Skilled Worker visa. During your studies you can also work up to 20 hours a week in term time.
