AP Calculus is the College Board's sequence of university-level mathematics courses for high-school students: AP Pre-Calculus, which builds the function foundation; AP Calculus AB, equivalent to one semester of college calculus; and AP Calculus BC, which covers two. Each course has its own AP exam every May. At Studrise we offer one-on-one online tutoring for all three.

That is why an AP Calculus score counts as one of the strongest signals of academic readiness in university applications, especially in the United States and Canada — and many universities across Europe and the UK accept it too. A high score makes your application stand out and earns credit or advanced placement at most universities. Choosing the right course — AB, BC, or Pre-Calculus first — is the first and most important decision on that path.

All three exams share the same skeleton — a multiple-choice and a free-response section — but differ in length, question count and scope:

All three exams are scored on a 1–5 scale; a 3 is generally treated as passing, while selective universities and competitive programs such as engineering expect a 4 or 5. Raw scores from the multiple-choice and free-response sections are combined with equal weight (62.5% / 37.5% in Pre-Calculus) and converted to the scale. Students who sit the BC exam also receive an AB subscore, which lets universities award AB credit from a BC result. Credit differs too: AB earns one semester (Calculus I) at most universities, BC two semesters (Calculus I–II). The share of 5s in BC is noticeably higher than in AB — not because the exam is easier, but because students who choose BC tend to be better prepared.
Which course is right depends on your current math level and your target program. If your algebra and trigonometry are not solid yet, starting with AP Pre-Calculus is the healthiest path; with a strong pre-calculus base and a target in the social sciences, business or life sciences, AP Calculus AB is enough for most programs; if you are aiming for engineering, physics, mathematics or computer science and your school schedule allows it, AP Calculus BC sets you apart. Because the exams are held in May, preparation usually spans the school year; for a student starting calculus from scratch, 6–9 months for AB and 8–12 months for BC is realistic.
