What is the AP English Literature and Composition exam?

AP English Literature and Composition is an advanced course run by the College Board that is equivalent to an introductory university-level literature course. It focuses on the close reading of poetry and prose fiction, the analysis of literary elements and writing text-based arguments. It is strong preparation for high-school students interested in literature who want to take their analytical English reading and writing skills to an advanced level.

The exam has two sections: multiple-choice questions and three free-response essays (FRQs) — a poetry analysis, a prose fiction analysis and a literary argument essay. The FRQ part assesses reading a text closely and interpreting it around a clear thesis. A high AP English Literature score strengthens an application file and can earn introductory course credit at many universities.

AP English Literature and Composition exam format

The AP English Literature exam has two sections — multiple-choice and free-response — and takes about 3 hours in total:

Section I: Multiple-choice

55 questions · 60 minutes · poetry and prose text analysis

Section II: Free-response (FRQ)

3 essays · 120 minutes · more than half of the score

Poetry and prose analysis essays

Close reading of a given poem and a prose passage

Literary argument essay

A thesis-based argument on a chosen literary work

Scoring and target scores

AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale, with the multiple-choice and free-response sections combined into the final score. A 3 is generally considered passing, but selective universities ask for a 4 or 5 for credit or placement. The three essays are scored against criteria such as thesis, evidence and commentary, and sophistication of analysis. Points can be earned from each essay, so consistent and in-depth analysis is decisive.

AP English Literature suits high-school students with a solid English foundation who love literature and want to take analytical English reading and writing to an advanced level. AP exams are held each year in May. Because literary analysis skill develops over time, steady reading and writing practice spread across a school year is ideal for most students.

Frequently asked questions

The literary argument essay does not provide a fixed book list in advance; you choose a work of literary merit that fits the prompt. For this reason, preparing by knowing a few works well is a strong strategy.

Because poems are dense and multi-layered, working out meaning and literary elements in limited time takes practice. With regular close-reading work this skill improves noticeably; in our work we treat poetry analysis as a separate focus area.

Because this exam requires interpreting literary texts and writing analytical essays in English, a solid English foundation is important. Even so, the literary analysis skill required can be developed noticeably during preparation with the right strategy and regular practice.

All lessons are online and one-on-one. Your tutor works live with you on screen, combining teaching, practice and exam strategy in a single flow. Lessons can be recorded so you can review them any time.
