What is the AP Calculus BC exam?

AP Calculus BC is an advanced high-school course administered by the College Board, equivalent to two semesters of university calculus. It covers all of Calculus AB's topics and adds series, parametric, polar and vector-valued functions, and advanced techniques of integration.

The exam has multiple-choice and free-response sections, with parts that require a calculator and parts that do not. It is strong preparation for students heading into quantitative and engineering university programs; the BC exam also reports an AB subscore that reflects performance on the AB-level topics.

AP Calculus BC exam format

The AP Calculus BC exam has two sections and takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes:

Section I: Multiple Choice

45 questions · 1 hour 45 minutes · 50% of the exam score

Section II: Free Response

6 questions (FRQ) · 1 hour 30 minutes · 50% of the exam score

Graphing calculator allowed on one part of each section, banned on the other

AB subscore

A separate 1–5 score is also reported for the AB-level topics

Scoring and target scores

The AP Calculus BC exam is graded on a 1–5 scale, and a score of 3 or above is generally considered passing. Alongside the BC score, the exam also reports a separate AB subscore reflecting performance on the AB-level topics. Many universities grant credit for a 3, while selective engineering programs expect a 4 or 5. Because the content is broad, a solid command of series and advanced integration techniques is decisive for a high score.

AP Calculus BC suits high-school students who have a firm grasp of calculus and can move at a fast pace toward quantitative fields. AP exams are held every year in May, so preparation usually spans the school year. Because the content is dense, regular practice and getting used to the free-response format early matter; a planned schedule is needed to close gaps in the final months.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, many students skip AB and take BC directly, since BC already includes all the AB content. This requires a strong pre-calculus foundation and the pace to move quickly.

The BC exam reports a separate 1–5 score for performance on the AB-level topics. Even if your overall BC score is lower, some universities may grant AB-level credit for a strong AB subscore.

Series are one of the most prominent topics that set the BC exam apart from AB, and they appear regularly in both the multiple-choice and free-response sections. A solid command of convergence tests and Taylor series is important for a high score.
