Study in Australia: your university application, step by step

Direct entry with the Turkish diploma, applications with IB / A-Levels / SAT, or a one-year Foundation / Diploma pathway into Group of Eight universities: there is a door for every profile.
Post-study work visa
The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) usually gives graduates 2–3 years of full-time work rights; during study, up to 48 hours a fortnight is allowed in term time.

The education system in Australia
Australian higher education is organised under the national AQF framework; a bachelor's usually takes 3 years and can be extended with an optional honours year. The academic year starts in February and has two semesters.

The large majority of Australia's 40-plus universities are public; international students receive no government subsidy and pay full tuition. Eight research-intensive universities are known as the Group of Eight (Go8): Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, ANU, Monash, Queensland, Adelaide and Western Australia. Beyond them, technology- and practice-oriented universities such as UTS, RMIT, Macquarie, Deakin and QUT are also popular with students from Türkiye. Every institution and programme that admits international students must hold a national CRICOS registration; a visa application is only possible with an offer for a CRICOS-registered programme. Since 2025 the government sets a yearly national planning level for international student numbers and allocates places to universities, so places are managed and early applications matter — follow the current policy on the Department of Education's page.
How to apply to a university in Australia
1. Choose the programme, university and entry route
3–5 universities are chosen by subject, city and budget; each programme's required GPA for the Turkish diploma, English condition and, if needed, the Foundation / Diploma alternative are noted separately. Australia has no national application portal — each university is assessed on its own.
2. English test and documents
IELTS Academic (usually 6.5 with no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic is planned; transcripts, the diploma / expected-graduation letter, passport and, where needed, a personal statement and references are prepared. Documents must be in English or come with a certified translation.
3. Direct application to the university
Applications go through each university's own online portal (or a registered education agent); the fee is usually AUD 50–150 and some universities waive it. Aim for August–November for the February intake and March–May for July; popular programmes fill earlier.
4. Conditional offer, acceptance and deposit
The university usually issues a conditional offer within a few weeks; once the conditions (diploma, IELTS) are met, the unconditional offer follows. The student accepts, pays part of the first-semester tuition and the OSHC health cover; in return the CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) required for the visa is issued.
5. Student visa (subclass 500)
Online application via ImmiAccount: CoE, Genuine Student (GS) responses, proof of funds, OSHC, English test result, health examination and biometrics. Processing times vary; aim to lodge at least 3–4 months before classes start.
6. Housing, orientation and arrival
The campus hall, student residence or shared-house application is made alongside the visa grant; the flight is planned to arrive in time for the university's international orientation week (O-Week). On arrival the student ID, bank account and tax file number (TFN) are set up.
Admission requirements
Academic
- High-school diploma and transcripts for the last 2–3 years; many universities accept the Turkish diploma for direct entry with a programme-specific minimum GPA (higher for competitive programmes)
- IB Diploma, A-Levels or SAT / AP scores are accepted and make direct entry easier
- If the GPA falls short, a university-linked Foundation Studies (into year 1) or Diploma (into year 2) pathway
- For a master's: bachelor's degree and transcript; programme-specific minimum GPA and work experience
Language
- IELTS Academic: usually 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0; 7.0 and above for teaching, health and law
- TOEFL iBT 79–94 or PTE Academic 58–65 accepted at most universities; equivalences vary by university
- Foundation programmes may accept lower scores (IELTS 5.5–6.0); a university English-language (ELICOS) package can bridge a shortfall
- Results are usually valid for 2 years; the visa application may also require test evidence
Entrance tests
- Most bachelor's programmes have no separate entrance test; admission rests on GPA and the English score
- Undergraduate medicine requires UCAT ANZ and an interview; dentistry and some health programmes use similar tests — limited international places
- Portfolio or audition for architecture, design, music and fine arts
- GMAT / GRE for some business master's programmes; GAMSAT for graduate-entry medicine
Documents
- Passport (valid for the whole stay)
- Certified English translation of transcripts and diploma; for pre-graduation applications, a predicted-grades / expected-graduation letter from the school
- Personal statement, CV and references (especially for master's, scholarships and competitive programmes)
- For the visa: CoE, GS statement, proof of funds, OSHC policy, health examination, biometrics and, if required, a police certificate

Tuition and living costs in Australia
Australia sits in the upper band of the countries Turkish students consider for tuition and living costs; in return, term-time work rights and the post-study work visa partly balance the budget. All figures are in Australian dollars (AUD), and universities update tuition every year.

Scholarships and funding
Full scholarships are rare in Australia; the main source is universities' merit scholarships for international students, given as tuition reductions. The government's Australia Awards programme targets developing countries and Türkiye is not eligible, so we build the plan around university scholarships.
Go8 universities' international merit scholarships
Awards such as the Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship, Sydney International Student Award, Monash International Merit Scholarship, UNSW International Scientia and Adelaide Global Academic Excellence can cover 10–50% of tuition, and for a limited number of students all of it. Most are assessed automatically with the application; some need a separate form and an earlier deadline. Terms are updated yearly.
Other universities' international awards
Universities such as UTS, RMIT, Macquarie, Deakin, QUT, Griffith and Curtin offer country- or faculty-based 10–30% tuition reductions and Vice-Chancellor's scholarships for international students, often with better odds than the Go8. Whether Türkiye is in scope is checked separately on each university's scholarship page.
Destination Australia
The Australian government's scholarship of up to AUD 15,000 a year for students at regional campuses (outside the major cities); international students are eligible. Applications go through the university, places are limited, and the programme's continuation is set each year in the budget.
Research Training Program (RTP) and PhD scholarships
For research master's and PhD study, the government's RTP scholarship provides a tuition waiver and a living stipend; it is open to international students and universities top it up with their own PhD awards. Applications go through the university's research office, usually in two rounds a year.

Visa and residence permit
Turkish citizens study in Australia on the Student visa (subclass 500); it covers the whole course and needs no separate residence card. The application is entirely online through ImmiAccount.
- Application: online in ImmiAccount once the CoE is issued; processing times vary, so lodge at least 3–4 months before classes start. Biometrics and the health examination (panel doctor) are completed in Türkiye.
- Documents: CoE, passport, responses for the Genuine Student (GS) requirement explaining the study intention (replaced the GTE in 2024), proof of funds (AUD 29,710 for 12 months of living costs in 2024/25 + first-year tuition + travel; updated yearly), an OSHC health-cover policy covering the whole visa period, English test result, a police certificate if requested and welfare arrangements for students under 18.
- Visa fee: raised to AUD 1,600 in July 2024 and to around AUD 2,000 in July 2025; confirm the current amount on the Department of Home Affairs page.
- Work: up to 48 hours a fortnight in term time once the course has started, unlimited during official breaks.
- After graduation: the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) usually gives bachelor's and master's graduates 2–3 years of work rights; the 2024 reform set an age cap of 35 and reset the durations — check the current conditions.
