AP World History: Modern is an advanced course run by the College Board that is equivalent to an introductory university-level world history course. It examines global history from roughly the year 1200 to the present; state formation, trade networks, colonialism, revolutions and globalization are central to the course. It is strong preparation for high-school students interested in history, international relations or the social sciences.
Alongside multiple-choice and short-answer questions, the exam includes two long essays: a document-based question (DBQ) and a long essay question (LEQ). These essays assess building an evidence-supported argument and historical reasoning skills. A high AP World History score strengthens an application file and can earn introductory course credit at many universities.

The AP World History exam is built from multiple-choice, short-answer and free-response parts and takes about 3 hours 15 minutes in total:
55 questions · 55 minutes · source-based
3 questions · 40 minutes
1 essay · argument supported by documents · about 60 minutes
1 essay · historical reasoning · about 40 minutes
AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale, with the multiple-choice, short-answer and free-response sections combined into the final score. A 3 is generally considered passing, but selective universities ask for a 4 or 5 for credit or placement. The DBQ and LEQ essays are scored against specific criteria (thesis, evidence, contextualization, reasoning), and points can be earned for each criterion.
AP World History suits high-school students interested in history and written analysis. AP exams are held each year in May. Because the content covers a wide span of time, steady work spread across a school year is ideal for most students; making the DBQ and LEQ essay structure a habit is central to preparation.
