AP Exam Prep Guide 2027: When to Start, Which Route, How Long

An AP prep plan built backwards from the 2027 calendar: the 13 November ordering deadline, where to sit the exam in Türkiye, an honest comparison of the four prep routes, where the points come from in each subject, and a 6-month study calendar from November to May.

Short Answer: What Does AP Prep Involve, and How Long Does It Take?

AP exam prep means covering a course's full syllabus and practising in the exam format so you can score a 4 or 5 on the College Board's Advanced Placement exams in May; a realistic window for one subject is 6-9 months at 4-6 hours a week. The 2027 exams run on 3-7 and 10-14 May 2027, and schools must submit their exam orders by 13 November 2026. If you are reading this in November 2026, you have six months ahead of you and only days to register.

Most families in Türkiye hear about AP as an "overseas exam", but the questions are always the same: where do you start, is a course necessary, and where do you actually sit the exam? Most Turkish-language sources either quote 2024 fees or stop at "study hard". This guide gives you three things in one place: a plan built backwards from the 2027 calendar, an honest comparison of the four prep routes, and a subject-by-subject look at where the points come from.

Key Takeaways
- Plan 6-9 months and 4-6 hours a week per subject; a student taking two subjects needs 8-12 hours of steady weekly work from November 2026 to May 2027.
- The 2027 AP exams run 3-14 May; the school ordering deadline is 13 November 2026, after which a USD 40 late fee per exam applies until 12 March 2027.
- In Türkiye the exam fee is USD 129 per exam (about 6,430 TL); you register through your school or an authorised centre, never directly with the College Board.
- There are four routes: your school's AP course, self-study (CED + AP Classroom + past FRQs), a group course, or 1:1 tutoring. The right one depends on whether your school offers AP and on your target score.
- In 2027 Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Economics are "hybrid digital": multiple choice in Bluebook, free response on paper.

When Should AP Prep Start? Working Backwards From the 2027 Calendar

An AP prep plan is built backwards from the registration date, not the exam date. According to the College Board's 2027 exam calendar, the key dates are:

Step Date What it means
School exam-ordering deadline 13 November 2026 Students tell their school's AP coordinator which exams they will take by this date
Late-order period 14 November 2026 - 12 March 2027 USD 40 late-order fee per exam (College Board fee page)
Exam weeks 3-7 and 10-14 May 2027 Each subject is fixed to one day and one session
Late-testing week 17-21 May 2027 Only for clashes and approved reasons
Scores July 2027 In the College Board account

Exam days for the subjects most often taken in Türkiye: Calculus AB and BC on 10 May, Physics C: Mechanics on 3 May, Physics 1 and Physics C: E&M on 5 May, Chemistry on 6 May, Microeconomics on 4 May, Macroeconomics on 7 May, Statistics on 11 May, Computer Science A on 12 May, Psychology on 14 May. The full subject-by-subject list and score release date are in our AP exam dates 2027 guide.

Three practical conclusions follow from this calendar:

  • A student starting in November 2026 can finish one or two subjects in six months; three will not fit, so it is healthier to sit two in 2027 and leave the third for 2028.
  • A student starting in September (the "classic" academic-year plan) works at a one-year rhythm; we laid that out in how to prepare for AP exams: a 1-year plan.
  • Students who begin with a summer school or summer camp (the summer after Grade 10, for example) enter September with a third of the syllabus done. That is the answer to the "AP summer prep" question: summer is for laying foundations, not finishing a course.

Who Sits the AP Exam in Türkiye, and Where?

Before you start preparing, answer one question: do you know where you will sit the exam? You cannot register for an AP exam individually with the College Board. According to the College Board's registration page, a student joins the exam in My AP with a join code from the AP coordinator of the school administering it; the school places the order and collects the fee.

There are three situations:

1. Your school offers an AP programme. The easiest case: you tell the coordinator which subjects you will take, and the school orders by 13 November. Prep then means filling the gaps the school course leaves and adding exam practice.

2. Your school does not offer AP, but you want to sit the exam. The College Board's official answer is this: find authorised schools in your country in the AP Course Ledger, call their coordinators and ask whether they are accepting outside students this year, and do it early in the school year. In Türkiye this has become harder: under the Ministry of National Education (MEB) regulations for private schools, schools that are exam centres may only test their own students; according to education journalist Pervin Kaplan's October 2025 article, the College Board has asked the ministry through the Private Schools Association to lift this restriction, and the capacity of the non-school authorised centre is limited. The practical conclusion: if you will test outside your school, book your seat in September-October; looking for a seat in November brings the late-order fee and the risk of finding none.

3. You want to move into an AP programme at a MEB-affiliated school. From 2026-27, enrolment in AP, IB and similar international programmes at MEB schools requires the UDSP (International Diploma Selection and Placement) exam. In those schools the AP journey starts with UDSP; see our UDSP page for the format and the 2027 date.

The fee side is clear: under the College Board's 2026-27 tariff, the fee at schools outside the US is USD 129 per exam, about 6,430 TL at the 30 October 2026 rate; authorised centres may add a service charge. Late orders, cancellations and sample budgets are in the AP exam fee 2027 guide.

AP Prep Routes: School, Self-Study, Group Course, 1:1 Tutoring

"Is an AP prep course necessary?" has no single answer; each of the four routes is right for a different student. The table below is compiled from publicly listed prices in Türkiye; Studrise programme fees are not included, because they depend on the number of subjects and programme length and are shared in a free consultation.

Route Best for Duration / pace Cost (market) Weak point
Your school's AP course Students whose school runs an AP programme Full year, 4-5 school periods a week Included in school fees Class pace; FRQ practice is left to April at most schools
Self-study Disciplined students with strong English taking one subject 6-9 months, 5-6 hours a week 0 TL (CED + AP Classroom + past papers) plus books at 1,000-1,700 TL Nobody tells you why you got it wrong
Group course Students with no AP at school taking 2+ subjects 60-75-hour packages, two sessions a week 60-75-hour live online group packages at roughly 85,000-90,000 TL (publicly listed prices, November 2026) Pace follows the group average; hard to close individual unit gaps
1:1 tutoring Students aiming for a 5, short on time, or stuck on specific units 6 months, two lessons a week Institutional 90-minute lessons at roughly 3,000-3,500 TL; lower on individual listings Most expensive per hour; wasted if the tutor does not know the AP format

Two questions settle it. Does your school teach the AP course? If so, 1:1 tutoring is only needed for missing units and FRQs; redoing the whole syllabus is a waste. How many subjects, and what target? One subject, a target of 4 and strong English make self-study realistic; two or three subjects and a target of 5 call for outside structure. What drives the price of 1:1 tutoring is explained on our AP tutoring pricing page.

If you have not yet decided which subjects to take, read which AP courses should you take first, and if you are torn between AP and IB, the AP vs IB comparison. Subject choice happens in week zero of prep, not week one.

AP Prep Strategy by Subject: Where Do the Points Come From?

In AP exams most of the score comes from two sections: multiple choice (MCQ) and free response (FRQ). The weighting varies by subject, and the place most students lose points is the FRQ, because it is the section practised least at school. Focus points for the subject groups most taken in Türkiye:

AP Calculus AB / BC

50% MCQ, 50% FRQ; the FRQ has separate calculator and no-calculator parts. The units that cost the most points are applications of integration (volumes, accumulation functions) in AB and series and parametric equations in BC. Solving at least two past FRQs at the end of each unit and scoring your own answer with the College Board's scoring guidelines earns more points than full mocks in April. The course structure and the AB-BC difference are on the AP Calculus page.

AP Physics 1 / Physics C

Physics 1 is algebra-based, Physics C calculus-based; both have "design an experiment and explain" FRQs. The most common lost point for students in Türkiye is finding the right result without writing the justification: the AP reader scores the reasoning, not the answer. Physics C: Mechanics and E&M fall in the same week (3 and 5 May), so students taking both should build two separate mock schedules in April. For subject choice see the AP Physics page.

AP Chemistry and AP Biology

Both are hybrid format in 2027: MCQ in Bluebook, FRQ on paper. In Chemistry the score gap opens in equilibrium (Unit 7) and acids and bases (Unit 8); in Biology in data interpretation and experimental analysis questions. In both, memorising gets you a 3 and explaining "why" gets you a 5. Details on the AP Chemistry and AP Biology pages.

AP Computer Science A and Principles

CS A asks for algorithms and class design in Java; the FRQ has four questions and all four require writing code, so practising code on paper is essential. In CS Principles, part of the score comes from the Create performance task submitted before the exam (2027 deadline: 30 April). A student who leaves that task to April steals time from exam revision. Programmes are on the AP Computer Science page.

AP Microeconomics and Macroeconomics

Two of the shortest AP syllabuses; they are among the rare subjects where a 5 is reachable with 3-4 months of focused prep. 33% of the score comes from the FRQ, and the FRQs ask for graphs: an unlabelled graph earns no credit even with the right analysis. For students taking both, Micro is on 4 May and Macro on 7 May. Details on the AP Economics page.

AP English Language / Literature, Psychology, World History

In the language and literature exams 55% of the score comes from three essays; even students in Türkiye with strong English lose points by not framing the thesis the way the prompt asks. Psychology and World History are MCQ-heavy with wide syllabuses, so a weekly review schedule matters as much as deep study. Pages: AP English, AP Psychology, AP World History, AP Statistics.

A 6-Month AP Prep Plan: November 2026 to May 2027

The plan below is for a student starting in November and taking one or two subjects. Students who started in September spread the same phases over a longer period.

Period Goal Weekly load (per subject)
November - December 2026 Registration done; first 40% of the syllabus following the CED unit list; an AP Classroom progress check after each unit 5 hours
January - February 2027 Remaining 60% of the syllabus; 1-2 past FRQs after each unit, self-scored with the scoring guidelines 5-6 hours
March 2027 Unit-by-unit review; MCQ timing practice; identify the three weakest units 5 hours
April 2027 One full-length timed mock a week; after each mock, work only on the error types 6 hours
Final 2 weeks Weak units, formula and concept summaries, Bluebook setup and device check, exam-day logistics 4 hours

The most important row is the FRQ row in January-February. Most students in Türkiye start treating FRQs as "mock material" in April; done right after each unit, FRQs both consolidate the concept and teach you early what the reader expects.

AP Prep Resources: Official, Free and Books

AP has one advantage over the SAT: the College Board publishes the syllabus and past questions in full. Used in the right order, these resources form the backbone of your prep.

  • Course and Exam Description (CED): the official syllabus for each subject with unit weightings, learning objectives and sample questions. The prep plan is built from the CED unit list, not from any other source.
  • AP Classroom: accessed with the join code from your school's coordinator; contains unit-based progress checks and lesson videos. Students testing outside their school get the same access with the testing school's code.
  • Past FRQs and scoring guidelines: open on AP Central by subject and year. The single most valuable resource; for every question, "what the points were awarded for" is written line by line.
  • Bluebook: in 2027 the great majority of exams run in the College Board's Bluebook app. According to the hybrid list, in Calculus AB/BC, Chemistry, Biology, Physics 1/2/C, Micro/Macro and Precalculus the MCQ is in Bluebook and the FRQ is written in a paper booklet. Install the app weeks before the exam and do at least one practice test in it before exam day.
  • Free video resources: CED-aligned free AP video lessons (Calculus, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics) are a good start for students seeing the syllabus for the first time, but no substitute for FRQ practice.
  • Books: the common AP prep book series cost 1,000-1,700 TL per subject in Türkiye; one book is enough for strategy, and the official FRQs are more valuable for questions.

The Turkish-resource question comes up often: there is practically no Turkish-language AP prep book, and the exam is in English. A Turkish explanation helps when you meet a concept for the first time, but you cannot score full marks on an FRQ without learning the terminology in English.

The 5 Most Common AP Prep Mistakes

  1. Taking too many subjects. Three APs plus school plus the SAT in the same year means three 3s for most students. Two 5s are a stronger signal in a university application than three 3s.
  2. Leaving FRQs to April. The January-February row in the plan above is the cure.
  3. Looking for a test site in November. If you test outside your school, the seat is a September-October job; after 13 November you face both the USD 40 fee and a capacity risk.
  4. Sitting the exam without trying the digital format. Solving MCQs in Bluebook differs from paper: tools, flagging, the timer. Do not let exam day be your first encounter.
  5. Finding the right answer and not writing the reasoning. In science and maths FRQs points go to the steps, not the result; "the answer is 12" on its own can score zero.

How Studrise Works for AP Prep

AP prep at Studrise runs in two layers. First, AI Teacher lessons designed and trained by educators with 7-26 years of experience in their subject: CED-aligned unit teaching, a quiz at the end of each lesson, unit tests and full-length practice exams; the student asks questions by text or voice and shares a photo of their working. Second, 1:1 live AP tutoring at Studrise Academy: the tutor builds the plan around the student's school syllabus and target score, scores FRQs together and interprets Bluebook mocks.

Programmes are available in 19 AP subjects; which subject, which starting level and how many weeks the plan needs are set in a free consultation. What determines the price is explained openly on the AP tutoring pricing page.

Students planning to use AP for direct university entry in countries such as Germany can find which subject combinations are accepted on our study in Germany consultancy page. For those preparing for the SAT at the same time, the SAT prep programme is planned on the same calendar.

Conclusion: Where to Start AP Prep Today

In three steps: first confirm the school or centre where you will test and have the order placed before 13 November 2026; then cut the number of subjects to one or two based on your target score; finally choose the prep route. Done in the right order, AP prep fits into six months; done in the wrong order, it means a late-order fee, no seat, and FRQ panic starting in April. Note the calendar from the AP exam dates 2027 page, settle your subject choice, and solve the first unit's FRQ this week.
