What is the IELTS exam?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) measures English proficiency and is accepted worldwide by universities, immigration authorities and employers. It has two types — Academic and General Training — and university applications usually require the Academic module.

The test assesses four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Results are reported as band scores from 0 to 9 for each skill and as an overall average. The test can be taken on paper or computer; the Speaking section is a face-to-face interview in both formats.

IELTS exam format

IELTS has four sections and takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes in total:

Listening

4 recordings · 40 questions · about 30 minutes

Reading

3 passages · 40 questions · 60 minutes

Writing

2 tasks (Task 1 and Task 2) · 60 minutes

Speaking

Face-to-face interview · 3 parts · 11–14 minutes

Scoring and target scores

IELTS reports a band score from 0 to 9 for each skill, with the overall score as the average of the four. Most undergraduate and master's programs ask for an overall score of 6.0–7.0, and some departments set a minimum on individual skills. Band scores are generally accepted for two years.

IELTS is held frequently throughout the year, so the test date is flexible. Preparation time depends on your current English level and target band; for most students a focused 6–12 weeks is enough. Writing and Speaking improve fastest with individual feedback.

Frequently asked questions

The Academic module is designed for university applications and General Training for work and migration. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same; the Reading and Writing sections differ. We clarify which one your target program requires.

Both formats have the same content and scoring; the computer-based test releases results faster and offers more date options. The Speaking section is face-to-face in both. We choose based on your typing speed and the setting you are comfortable in.

A half-band rise (for example 6.0 to 6.5) is achievable for most students with a few weeks of focused work; a full band takes longer. The level assessment shows a realistic timeline to your target.

All lessons are online and one-on-one. Your tutor works live with you on screen, combining teaching, practice and exam strategy in a single flow. Lessons can be recorded so you can review them any time.
