SAT Math topics: the four domains, sub-topics and question weights
This guide shows which topics the Digital SAT Math section tests, how heavily each one counts, and which order of study raises your score fastest.
How the SAT Math section is built
| Feature | Digital SAT Math |
|---|---|
| Questions | 44 questions · 2 modules (22 + 22) |
| Time | 70 minutes (35 per module) |
| Question types | ≈ 75% multiple choice · ≈ 25% student-produced response |
| Calculator | Allowed throughout · Desmos built into Bluebook |
| Score | 200–800 |
| Adaptivity | Module 2 difficulty depends on module 1 |
Questions come from four content domains. The weights below are the ranges published by the College Board; a question or two can shift between sittings.
1. Algebra — ≈ 35%, 13–15 questions
- Linear equations and inequalities in one variable
- Linear equations in two variables; graphs, slope, intercepts
- Linear functions and translating word problems into equations
- Systems of linear equations: number of solutions, inconsistent and dependent systems
- Systems of linear inequalities and solution regions
The heaviest domain and the fastest source of points: the questions follow patterns and leave little room for error.
2. Advanced Math — ≈ 35%, 13–15 questions
- Non-linear equations: quadratic, absolute value, radical and rational equations
- Systems mixing linear and non-linear equations
- Quadratic functions: vertex, roots, discriminant, reading graphs
- Polynomials, factoring and equivalent expressions
- Exponential functions and growth/decay models
- Function notation, transformations and composition
Together with Algebra this carries 70% of the score; the hardest questions live here and a 700+ target is not realistic without mastering it.
3. Problem Solving and Data Analysis — ≈ 15%, 5–7 questions
- Ratios, rates, unit conversion and percentage problems
- One-variable data: mean, median, mode, range, interpreting standard deviation
- Two-variable data: scatterplots, linear and exponential models
- Probability and conditional probability (reading tables)
- Samples, margin of error and interpreting study design
4. Geometry and Trigonometry — ≈ 15%, 5–7 questions
- Area and volume; composite figures
- Angles, triangles, similarity and the Pythagorean theorem
- Circles: arcs, central angles, equation of a circle
- Right-triangle trigonometry (sin, cos, tan) and radians
A formula sheet is provided in the test; reading the figure correctly and spotting similarity solves most of these, not memorisation.
In what order should you study?
Our recommended order, weighing question share, learning speed and cost of mistakes:
| Priority | Domain | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Algebra | Highest weight, pattern questions, quick wins |
| 2 | Advanced Math | The other 35%; required for 700+ |
| 3 | Problem Solving and Data Analysis | Few questions, but misreading costs points |
| 4 | Geometry and Trigonometry | Formula sheet provided; finish last |
In lessons we personalise this order from the level assessment: a student who is already solid on algebra starts straight at advanced math. After each domain we build speed and accuracy with timed domain sets and module-length practice.
The most common SAT Math mistakes
- Reading the numbers, not the question: "after how many years" and "in which year" are different answers.
- Not using Desmos: systems and graph questions take seconds in Desmos; solving by hand is slow and risky.
- Leaving SPR questions blank: wrong answers cost nothing; every box must be filled.
- Losing time in module 1: module 2 difficulty depends on module 1; finishing the easy questions fast and right directly affects the score.
- Rushing unit and percentage conversions: most data-analysis questions test attention, not knowledge.
