Short Answer: What Does It Take to Study at a UK University?
A Turkish high-school student who wants to study in the UK has two main doors: direct entry to year one with an IB, AP or A-level diploma, or a one-year International Foundation Year with the Turkish high-school diploma followed by the degree. All undergraduate applications go through UCAS; for 2027 entry the deadline is 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, and 13 January 2027 for every other course. The application fee is GBP 34.50; the personal statement is now a 4,000-character format answering three questions. International tuition runs roughly GBP 17,500-35,000 a year (up to GBP 50,000 in medicine); the Student visa requires a GBP 558 fee, a GBP 776-per-year health surcharge (IHS) and proof of GBP 1,529 a month in London (GBP 1,570 from 30 November 2026).
Updated: October 2026. Dates and fees are for 2027 entry (September 2027 start); every item links to UCAS, GOV.UK or the university's official page.
This guide gathers the topics we walk through step by step with families during UK study abroad consultancy: which entry route fits you, the UCAS calendar and the new personal statement format, admissions tests such as ESAT, TMUA, UCAT and LNAT, the English requirement, tuition ranges by course type, the Student visa file, scholarships, the Graduate Route and a 12-month plan.
Key Takeaways
- A Turkish high-school diploma alone is not enough for year one at most universities; direct entry needs IB/AP/A-level, otherwise an International Foundation Year.
- UCAS 2027 entry: 15 October 2026 (Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry, veterinary), 13 January 2027 (all other courses); application fee GBP 34.50 for 5 choices.
- New personal statement: three questions, 4,000 characters in total, at least 350 characters per answer.
- International undergraduate tuition ~GBP 17,500-35,000 a year; medicine GBP 30,000-50,000; Student visa GBP 558 + IHS GBP 776 a year + 9 months of maintenance funds.
- Graduate Route drops to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates from 1 January 2027; Chevening is a master's-only scholarship.
Entry with a Turkish Diploma: Foundation Year or Direct?
UK universities do not treat the Turkish high-school diploma (Lise Diploması) as a full equivalent of A-levels, because the last two years of school in the UK are built around 3-4 specialised subjects. That is why there are two separate routes:
| Route | Who it is for | Length | Typical requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct entry to year one | Holders of the IB Diploma (usually 30-38+ points), 3+ AP exams (4-5) or A-levels; at some universities, Turkish graduates with high averages | 3 years (4 in Scotland) | HL/AP subject requirements by course + IELTS 6.0-7.0 |
| International Foundation Year | Standard Turkish high-school graduates | 1 year + 3-year degree | High-school average of 60-80 (by university), IELTS 4.5-5.5 |
Some universities admit Turkish high-school graduates directly under certain conditions: the University of Sheffield accepts the Lise Diploması from "approved schools" with a high average; Southampton asks for 70% for its foundation and 80% in mathematics and physics for the engineering foundation. At most Russell Group universities and at Oxbridge, direct entry without IB/AP/A-levels is effectively not possible.
A foundation year is not a "lost year": it prepares you for the degree with academic English, essays, research skills and subject-specific content. But it does mean an extra year of tuition and living costs. For students who can take IB or AP, direct entry saves both a year and GBP 25,000-40,000; our IB courses and AP courses pages explain subject choice with a UK target in mind.
UCAS 2027 Entry: Calendar, Fee and Five Choices
UCAS is a single central system: one application, up to five choices (four in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science), one personal statement, one reference. The fee for 2027 entry is GBP 34.50 (UCAS FAQ), and this single fee covers the whole cycle including Extra and Clearing.
| Date | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| May 2026 | 2027 application form opened; submissions from 1 September 2026 | UCAS |
| 15 October 2026, 18:00 (UK) | Deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses | UCAS |
| 13 January 2027, 18:00 (UK) | "Equal consideration" deadline for all other undergraduate courses | UCAS |
| February-May 2027 | Decisions; UCAS Extra (for applicants with no offers) | UCAS |
| June 2027 | Firm and insurance choices; waiting for grades on conditional offers | UCAS |
| July-August 2027 | Results, Clearing, CAS and visa application | UCAS / GOV.UK |
Applications made after 13 January are considered only "if places remain"; for selective courses the door effectively closes. A big advantage for international students: a rejection on UCAS does not close your file to other universities, and you can continue in the same cycle through Extra and Clearing.
The New Personal Statement: Three Questions, 4,000 Characters
From 2026 entry, UCAS replaced the single 4,000-character essay with three structured questions, and the 2027 cycle uses the same format (UCAS personal statement page). The overall limit is still 4,000 characters (including spaces), with a minimum of 350 characters per answer:
- Why do you want to study this course or subject? Motivation, where your relationship with the subject began, which topics draw you in.
- How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject? IB/AP/high-school subjects, projects, the Extended Essay, relevant work at school.
- What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful? Volunteering, internships, competitions, reading, online courses, work experience.
Admissions staff read the three answers as a whole; writing them as disconnected pieces ("a subject list in question two, hobbies in question three") is the most common mistake. The question Turkish students find hardest is the second: the UK system does not want to hear "which subject you took" but "which topic in that subject led you to the course". A good personal statement takes at least three drafts and two months; start by late August for a 15 October application and by early November for 13 January.
Admissions Tests: ESAT, TMUA, UCAT and LNAT
Selective courses require a standardised admissions test on top of the UCAS file. The test calendar for 2027 entry was as follows; grade 11 students aiming for 2028 entry should shift the same calendar one year forward (Oxford 2027 admissions tests timeline):
| Test | Which courses | 2027 entry calendar | Studrise page |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESAT | Cambridge and Imperial engineering and natural sciences; some other universities | Registration deadline 28 September 2026; test 12-16 October 2026 | ESAT preparation |
| TMUA | Cambridge economics and computer science; mathematics-heavy courses at Imperial, Warwick, LSE, Durham | Same window as ESAT | Via the ESAT page |
| UCAT | The large majority of UK medical and dental schools | Testing 13 July-24 September 2026; registration closed 16 September 2026 | UCAT preparation |
| LNAT | Law at Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, KCL, Bristol, Durham, LSE | Registration opened 1 August 2026; test by 15 October 2026 for Oxbridge; until January 2027 for other universities | LNAT preparation |
The practical lesson: test registration closes before the UCAS deadline; a student who has not registered by the first week of September has effectively lost the 15 October application. Three to six months of regular preparation is a realistic timeframe.
English Requirement: IELTS and UKVI
There are two different thresholds. The university's academic requirement is IELTS 6.0-7.0 depending on the course (usually 7.0 with 6.5 in each band for law, medicine and English literature); foundation programmes ask for 4.5-5.5. The visa requirement, according to GOV.UK, is at least B2 for degree level; when the university issues a CAS on its own assessment, a separate UKVI-approved test is usually not needed, but foundation and some pre-sessional programmes require "IELTS for UKVI" (GOV.UK English requirement). Do not book a test before asking the university's CAS team which version is needed; our IELTS preparation page explains the difference between the two tests and the study plan for each target band.
International Tuition: Ranges by Course Type
International tuition in the UK is not capped by the government; each university sets its own. The picture from official 2026-27 published fees:
| Course type | Annual tuition range | Example (2026-27) |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom-based (business, law, social sciences, languages) | ~GBP 17,500-30,000 | Anglia Ruskin from GBP 17,500 (ARU); Loughborough Accounting and Finance GBP 25,950 (Loughborough) |
| Laboratory-based (engineering, science, computing) | ~GBP 24,000-38,000 | Loughborough Aeronautical Engineering GBP 30,700 (Loughborough) |
| Medicine, dentistry, veterinary science | ~GBP 30,000-50,000 (higher in clinical years) | Exeter BMBS GBP 48,900 (Exeter); Hull York Medical School GBP 49,750 (HYMS) |
| International Foundation Year | ~GBP 15,000-25,000 | By university and partner college programme |
Tuition can rise by 3-5% each year over the three years; universities state this in the offer letter. On living costs, the visa figure (below) is a good lower bound: GBP 15,000-18,000 a year in London and GBP 11,000-14,000 outside London is a realistic budget. A four-year total (foundation plus degree) for a classroom-based course outside London lands roughly in the GBP 120,000-150,000 band.
Student Visa: CAS, Maintenance Funds and IHS
Once the offer becomes unconditional and the tuition deposit is paid, the university issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number; the visa application is made with that number, no earlier than 6 months before the course starts (GOV.UK Student visa).
| Item | 2026-27 amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Visa application fee (from outside the UK) | GBP 558 | GOV.UK |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) | GBP 776 a year for students; ~GBP 2,328 for a 3-year degree (part years rounded up) | GOV.UK IHS |
| Maintenance, London | GBP 1,529 a month × 9 months = GBP 13,761; from 30 November 2026, GBP 1,570 × 9 = GBP 14,130 | GOV.UK; HC 584 statement of changes |
| Maintenance, outside London | GBP 1,171 × 9 = GBP 10,539; from 30 November 2026, GBP 1,203 × 9 = GBP 10,827 | Same sources |
| Unpaid portion of first-year tuition | Added to the maintenance figure | GOV.UK |
| Holding period | 28 consecutive days; the period must end no more than 31 days before the application date | GOV.UK |
The money can be in the student's or a parent's account; if a parent's account is used, a birth certificate and the parent's written consent go into the file. Turkish lira accounts are accepted for applications from Turkey, but the amount is converted at the OANDA rate specified by GOV.UK on the application day, so leave a 10% buffer against exchange-rate movements.
Scholarships: Not Chevening, but University Awards
The Chevening scholarship that Turkish families often ask about is only for one-year master's programmes; it does not apply to undergraduate applications (Chevening eligibility). Realistic sources of undergraduate funding are:
- Universities' international entrance scholarships: at most universities, a GBP 2,000-5,000 tuition discount assessed automatically with the application; Keele, for example, offers two awards of GBP 3,000 and GBP 5,000 for 2026-27 (Keele international scholarships). At Russell Group universities the amounts are lower, but there are department-level merit awards.
- Foundation-to-degree progression scholarships: discounts for students progressing from partner colleges to the degree.
- Full scholarships: very rare at undergraduate level; usually need-based and reserved for specific countries. Build the budget on full tuition.
The Graduate Route and Life After Graduation
After graduation, the Graduate Route visa gives the right to stay and work in the UK without a job offer. According to GOV.UK, it lasts 2 years for applications made by 31 December 2026 and 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates applying from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for doctoral graduates (GOV.UK Graduate visa). The application fee is GBP 937 and the IHS GBP 1,035 a year. A student starting in 2027 will graduate in 2030-31, so plan on the 18-month rule; the goal within that period is to find a sponsoring employer for a switch to the Skilled Worker visa.
12-Month Timeline: 2027 and 2028 Entry
The calendar for those targeting 13 January 2027 for 2027 entry, and for students now in grade 11 targeting 2028 entry, follows the same logic:
| Period | 13 January 2027 application (grade 12) | 2028 entry (grade 11) |
|---|---|---|
| October-November 2026 | Five-choice list, IELTS booking, first personal statement draft, reference request | Course research, IB/AP subject plan, check whether an admissions test is needed |
| December 2026 | Final personal statement, complete the UCAS form | IELTS practice test, first university visits (online open days) |
| 13 January 2027 | UCAS submission | Raise school grades; plan a summer programme |
| February-April 2027 | Decisions, interviews (if any), foundation applications | Start admissions test (UCAT/ESAT/LNAT) preparation |
| May-June 2027 | Firm/insurance choice; IELTS result; tuition deposit | Register for the UCAT July-September 2027 window |
| July-August 2027 | Final grades, unconditional offer, CAS, visa application, accommodation | First personal statement draft; ESAT/TMUA registration for 15 October 2027 candidates |
| September 2027 | Visa, flight, registration week | 2028 UCAS submission possible from 1 September |
Two dates decide the fate of the file: the UCAS deadline and the 28-day maintenance window. For the first, finish the personal statement in November; for the second, put the money in the account in May.
