Short Answer: What Does It Take to Study at a University in the USA?
Studying at a university in the USA is not decided by a single exam score: American universities review applications holistically. High school grades and course rigor, SAT/ACT scores, essays, teacher recommendations, extracurricular activities and English proficiency are read together. For fall 2027 entry, the Common App opened on August 1, 2026; Early Decision/Early Action deadlines at most schools fall on November 1, 2026, and Regular Decision on January 1–15, 2027. Annual tuition averages $31,880 for out-of-state students at public universities and $45,000 at private universities, with housing and food adding roughly $14,000 on top. Scholarships exist, but the number of schools offering need-based aid to international students is limited.
Updated: October 2026. This guide covers the 2026-27 application cycle (fall 2027 entry) using official sources: Common App steps, testing policies, cost ranges, scholarship types, the F-1 visa process and a 12-month timeline. If you would like to plan the process together, our USA study abroad consultancy page offers a free initial consultation.
Key Takeaways
- US admissions are holistic: GPA, SAT/ACT, essays, recommendations and activities are weighed together; no single score decides the outcome.
- For fall 2027 entry, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale and many other selective schools require the SAT/ACT again; the test-optional era is closing fast.
- Annual tuition (College Board 2025-26): public university out-of-state average $31,880, private university average $45,000; housing and food about $13,900.
- Few schools offer full need-based aid to international students; merit scholarships are more common but competitive.
- The F-1 visa requires the I-20, a $350 SEVIS fee, the DS-160 form, a $185 visa fee and a consular interview.
Why Is US University Admission Different? Holistic Review
In Türkiye, your YKS score and preference list determine placement. In the US, each university's own admissions office reads every file separately, usually with several readers. The file contains:
- High school transcript and course rigor: grades from grades 9–12 and whether the most challenging courses the school offers (AP, IB, advanced level) were taken.
- Standardized test: SAT or ACT (required or optional depending on the school's policy).
- Essays: the Common App main essay (650 words) plus school-specific supplements.
- Recommendation letters: usually the counselor plus 1–2 subject teachers.
- Activities: a 10-line list; depth and continuity count more than quantity.
- English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS or the Duolingo English Test.
Planned well, this structure works in a Turkish student's favor: instead of a result decided in one day on the YKS, a profile built over 3–4 years is evaluated. The disadvantage is that preparation has to begin before grade 11.
What Is the Common App? The Application System and 2026-27 Deadlines
The Common App is the shared application platform of more than 1,000 US universities. You open one account, enter personal details, activities, the main essay and your transcript once, and then send each school its own supplemental questions and application fee (usually $50–90). Some schools use the Coalition App or their own systems (MIT and the University of California system, for example, are not on the Common App).
| Application type | Deadline (fall 2027 entry) | Decision | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision (ED) | November 1, 2026 (November 15 at some schools) | Mid-December | Binding: if admitted, you must attend |
| Early Action (EA) / Restrictive EA | November 1, 2026 | Mid-December | Non-binding; REA bars early applications to other private schools |
| ED II | January 1–15, 2027 | February | Second binding round |
| Regular Decision (RD) | January 1–15, 2027 (February 1 at some schools) | March–April | Standard round |
Example: Harvard's official calendar lists Restrictive Early Action on November 1 and Regular Decision on January 1 (Harvard College Admissions). Always check each school's own date; the Common App dashboard shows every school's deadline separately.
The ED decision is critical for families: because it is binding, you are saying yes before seeing the aid offer. Families expecting need-based aid should use the school's net price calculator before committing to ED.
SAT/ACT: Is the Test-Optional Era Ending?
Between 2020 and 2023 most universities were test-optional because of the pandemic. For fall 2027 entry the picture has reversed:
- Harvard requires the SAT or ACT; in exceptional cases where the tests are inaccessible, AP, IB or national leaving exam results are accepted (Harvard).
- MIT requires the SAT/ACT for both first-year and transfer applicants (MIT Admissions).
- Stanford reinstated the SAT/ACT requirement starting with fall 2026 entry (Stanford Admission).
- Yale ended its "test-flexible" policy in May 2026 and requires the SAT/ACT from fall 2027 entry (Yale Admissions).
- Dartmouth, Brown, Penn, Cornell, Caltech and Georgetown also require testing; Princeton remains test-optional for fall 2027 and will require scores from 2028.
The practical conclusion: for a Turkish student aiming at a selective school, the SAT is no longer "optional." Taking the Digital SAT from Türkiye costs $111 and there are seven sittings a year; see our SAT prep page for target scores and scheduling. Even at schools that remain test-optional, a strong score makes a difference in scholarship decisions.
AP and IB: Credit, Exemptions and Admissions Weight
US universities generally grant college credit or course exemptions for AP scores of 4–5 and IB Higher Level scores of 5 and above; policies vary by school, and some selective schools cap the credit. The bigger effect is at the admissions stage: the office reads "did this student take the most rigorous courses available?" through AP/IB. If your high school in Türkiye does not offer AP, students can sit the exams as independent candidates. Our AP courses and IB courses pages help with course selection and exam timing.
Essays and Recommendation Letters
The Common App main essay is 650 words, chosen from seven prompts. A good essay is not a list of achievements but a concrete story that shows how the student thinks. School-specific supplements ("Why our university?") require research: a "why" answer that names no department, professor, lab or program falls flat.
For recommendation letters, students should build relationships with two subject teachers (ideally one quantitative, one verbal) from the start of grade 11. Letters must be in English; since most Turkish teachers are unfamiliar with the format, a short briefing note and an activity summary from the student makes the job easier.
TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo: English Proficiency
Required for every applicant whose high school curriculum was not in English. Most schools set minimums in these ranges: TOEFL iBT 80–100, IELTS 6.5–7.0, Duolingo English Test 115–130. Selective schools expect the upper end. Scores are usually valid for 2 years; a test taken in October–November 2026 covers the whole cycle. Our IELTS prep page is a good starting point.
US University Tuition: Public and Private School Costs
The averages below come from College Board's Trends in College Pricing 2025 report (2025-26 academic year). International students pay the out-of-state rate at public universities.
| Item | Public university (out-of-state) | Private nonprofit university |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees (average) | $31,880 | $45,000 |
| Housing and food (on campus, average) | ~$13,900 | ~$15,000–20,000 |
| Books, health insurance, personal expenses | $3,000–6,000 | $3,000–6,000 |
| Annual total (approx.) | $48,000–55,000 | $63,000–75,000 |
Averages can mislead: at the Ivy League and comparable selective private schools, tuition alone reaches $60,000–70,000 and the total cost $85,000–95,000. On the other hand, there are good public universities with tuition in the $20,000–25,000 band and private schools with generous merit aid. When planning the four-year total, factor in annual increases of 3–4 percent; the same College Board report puts the annual increase at private schools at 4.0 percent.
US University Scholarships: Need-Based and Merit-Based
There are two kinds of aid, and the distinction matters enormously for international students:
Need-based aid is calculated from the family's ability to pay. Most schools open it only to US citizens. Schools that give full need-based support to international students and ignore finances in admissions (need-blind) number barely more than a handful: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Amherst and Dartmouth lead the list. If you are admitted there, the cost can fall to zero depending on family income; but acceptance rates run between 3 and 7 percent. Other schools are "need-aware": asking for aid can lower your admission chances. The CSS Profile and ISFAA forms are required.
Merit scholarships are awarded for academic profile, test scores and activities; typically $10,000–30,000 per year, rarely a full ride. Many public universities and moderately selective private schools give international applicants automatic merit awards; a high SAT score converts directly into money here.
Practical strategy: the list should mix need-blind "dream" schools, "target" schools with strong merit aid and "safety" schools that fit the budget. The most common mistake we see is a student who applies only to the Ivy League and receives no aid from any of them.
The F-1 Student Visa: From I-20 to Interview
The visa process starts after admission and the deposit:
- Form I-20: the university issues the I-20 after receiving your proof of funds (a bank letter covering one year's total cost). Your SEVIS number is on the form.
- SEVIS I-901 fee: $350 for F-1, paid online at fmjfee.com; keep the receipt.
- Form DS-160: the online visa application; you upload a photo and declare social media usernames.
- Visa fee (MRV): $185, non-refundable (US Department of State fee table). Check the consulate's page at the time of application for the status of the $250 "visa integrity fee" enacted in 2025.
- Interview: at the Embassy in Ankara or the Consulate General in Istanbul; bring your passport, I-20, SEVIS receipt, DS-160 confirmation, admission letter, financial documents and transcript. The questions are short and direct: why this school, which major, who is paying, plans after graduation.
- Entry: on an F-1 you may enter the US no more than 30 days before the program start date.
Appointment demand is high in summer; book as soon as the I-20 arrives (April–May).
